Are printer cables universal?

I have a friend who was kind enough to give me an extra printer of his, but it's missing the printer cable. Are they pretty much "one size fits all"? And how much can I expect to pay for one new?

BTW, the printer is a Lexmark Jetprinter, if that makes a difference.

There are two fundamental types. We used to have parallel printer cables (25 pin plug one end, centronix the other) and we now have mainly USB.

USB A to B cables are universal.

Parallel printer cables come in two flavours - uni and bi-directional. From memory I don't think that matters on a Lexmark but don't quote me. If you get a bi-directional it will work on anything.

No, not all printer cables are the same.

A new cable usually costs about £10.

    Yes and no.

    There are 2 types

    USB

    And

    Parallel

Usb is like the memory stick plugs and the parallel is the one with 2 fat things at each end.
