Anyone out there ever take a course with AWAI?
am a freelance writer who works for magazines but I'm tired of making peanuts and would like to take a course in copywriting. I'm considering sending away for the course offered by the American Writers and Artists Institute. it costs $507 and is said to be excellent. They even claim to help their "graduates" get copywriting jobs afterwards. Anyone out there finished the course and got a job through them? Any other at home copywriting courses you want to recommend? I have my first copywriting job lined up and I have no idea what I'm doing.

I've never heard about it but suggest that you steer clear. It just sounds funny. I visited their website and it looks really scammy. And it sounds desperate. Looks like a con-job all the way. Sure, they'll teach you a few things, and might even pretend to help you get a job (for extra fees). And the way these things normally go, the $507 is nothing but a minor deposit on what you'll really end up paying. Or so it is with many of these things. I'd look somewhere else.

You can learn what AIWA teaches through various free sources, but they'll structure your learning. I wouldn't bank on them getting you a job though - you have to do that yourself. Some other good sources of info on freelance online writing are:
This source has a good list of books you can read as well - a lot cheaper than $500!
