The vice president elect is sworn in before the president elect, so if the president elect died the brand-new vice president would get a very rapid promotion.
Next in line is the Speaker of the House, followed by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate.
Now for something interesting: The rest of the successors are Presidential appointees (cabinet members). The tradition is for the old ones to resign effective at noon on 20 January. This makes for a VERY short succession list.
At Bush's 2001 inauguration, Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen was asked to stay on for a few more hours, off-site. This preserved the line of succession if something happened. Cohen was a Republican; which probably contributed to his selection as the designated survivor.

the vice president elect is always sworn in before the president elect. so is the Speaker of the House and the president pro tem of the senate. so the vice president becomes president.
