actually as an after thought, Im gonna say American sports, because I know how crazy and murderous the Europeans can get over their sports rivalries

Joe Louis Vs. Max Schmeling.
They were the toughest within the sport and gentlemen outside of it, toward fans and toward each other. And considering what both had to put up with in their own countries - Louis facing racism and few rights at home, Schmeling's hatred of Nazism (which was publicized only after their two fights) - made them heroes to people who would hate them in any other circumstance.
They didn't fight for their countries, they fought for themselves; and they fought against each other but they didn't fight each other; Schmeling didn't care that Louis was black and Louis didn't care that Schmeling was German. It was possibly the most intense yet gentlemanly rivalry ever.

Giants-Dodgers im a Dodger fan and anytime you go to dodger staidum and see a Giant fan you better tell him to take off the gear for his own safety. I think a Giants fan actually got killed at Dodger stadium 3 years ago.
