When you put the seed in the feeder, scatter some of it on the ground. Birds send out scouts to look for food and water and they will see this seed scattered on the ground and they will come and eat it. It will take a few days, but don't give up.
Another thing that you might do which will help attract birds is to purchase a small bird bath because when birds are looking for food, they are also looking for water. When you have your new birdbath, please remember to keep it filled with water, even in the winter. The same goes for your feeder, only keep it filled with seeds.

it depends on the feeder and the birds you want. Your local wild bird specialty store can give you great advice for your area and birds. If there aren't any stores in your area ,try the nearest birding society or a great reference book by Sally Roth, she writes simple , easy to use info for beginners. The library should have something good, too. A good general purpose seed is black Oil Sunflower seed. It attracts Cardinals, Jays, Nuthatches, and wrens to our feeders. Also Thistle [Niger] in tube feeders. Keep the feeder well stocked, clean and dry, the birds will find it usually within a few days. Enjoy

It only took a few days when I originally put my wild bird feeder out on my deck. I had a couple of beautiful red cardinals daily. Then, a pesky squirrel found it, too, and broke it. Immediately, I had squirrels quarrelling on my pile of seed on my deck. Now, I've hung a feeder from my eve (?) and I've got a few sparrows, etc., but still waiting for the cardinals. Good Luck and have a wonderful 2007.

Dress up like a girl bird.
Also works with rabbits, ducks, and Tazmanian Devils.
