Are landlords required to shovel your walkway?

I know laws vary, but is it generally understood that the landlord of a property is supposed to keep your walkway clear and safe?

We've had an unusually horrific dumping of snow and ice, and the whole city is out of snow shovels. My landlord lives next door and has one, but he hasn't shoveled my walkway.

I plan to ask him, but I want to know the law/requirement first.

Update:

Also driveway or parking lot?

Well, despite the previous answer about reading the lease, I would first check with your local government. In Chicago, as a landlord, I am the owner of the building and in my Ward I am required to shovel sidewalks in each direction, up to the property line. A tenant should never be "responsible" for this no matter where you live... sorry. However, if there is no local ruling on shoveling then sure... a landlord can tell you to do it yourself. I would question anyone who decides to move in to an apartment where a landlord says do it yourself. Even if no law requiring the landlord, if you slip/get hurt you can sue (no matter where you live) and I doubt they would take that risk. By the way, unless using a city lease agreement or state std lease form (again, in Chicago we use or should be using a City of Chicago Lease Agreement) someone can write what they want on a lease as far as terms. Doesn't make it solid though. If they violate local laws ... that lease is as good as toilet paper for the landlord and his/her protection.

I would say this is akin to mowing the grass or some other such yard work. Who keeps the lawn? Who handles the trash around the place? If it is you, then you should shovel. If it is the landlord, then he should shovel. I think this should be based on precedent. Sunflare -- have you ever even seen snow? Raking snow would not make a lick of sense.

You have to check your lease. My lease states I am responsible to shovel my own sidewalk. If you are unsure, ask your landlord,or ask him if you can borrow his shovel.
