is there anyplace a person can go to check to see if a written work *really* is copywritten?

i have a copy of a book that was supposedly made at college by some students. i have reason to believe that they might have just put the copywrite symbol on the book as they typed it (the book is on a disk that i am in possession of) and i want to verify if it's really copywritten or not. i have done a search for the book through yahoo and google and have not found anything. is there a way to figure it out?

It is copyrighted if is it their original work and falls under certain broad categories.

There is no registration process necessary to copyright a work; it is automatic.

"Copyright is secured automatically when the work is created, and a work is “created” when it is fixed in a copy or phonorecord for the first time. "

have your nearest LARGE librrary do a "book search" they can get ahold of just about anything book wise that has been copy wrighted, or you could go to the college and speak with the dean or a literature teacher, they have programs that do searches for plagerism and copywrighted stuff
