If you're married filing jointly, both people under age 65, you can have up to $16,900 income before you have to pay taxes. With income near $30,000, you will probably have to pay some tax. Whether or not you get anything back will depend on how much you had withheld. If you had more withheld than your total taxes, you'll get the extra refunded to you.

I can't be more specific without knowing how much you had withheld. Any answer even then would also depend on whether you had enough deductible expenses to itemize, or whether you use the standard deduction. The people who give answers that yes, you'll get money back without this information are making assumptions without enough information to make them.

You'd be eligible to have your taxes done at no charge at a VITA site. See irs.gov and type VITA in the search box to find more info on this program. There's most likely a site near you.

You may and you probably will. Make sure to take all deductions. Like medical if there was a lot of out of pocket and also if you paid in at work, it can be deducted too if your income is less thatn a certain amount. Also, all Dr. visits. co pays and mileage to and from Dr., pharmacy and haspitals, is all deductible at a certain rate. I don't leave anything out. If he cashed in any IRa's or anything for retirement and paid the taxes and became disabled before the end of 06, you should be able to claim that back. Make sure to have a good tax person, ask all the questions and have all your numbers ready. Good luck.

It's not how much money you make but how much you get to deduct. Subtract your deductions from your earnings and check the appropriate column in the tax table (link included) for how much gets you to $0.

It sounds like you have plenty of deductions to get a refund (medical costs, etc...) There are many places and tax advocates that can help you for little to no fees. I would recommend their help.
