Of all the potential 2008 presidential candidates, who has the most interest in balancing the budget?
I mean, damn, the Republicans used to be the party that promoted fiscal responsibility, but each of the last three Republican presidents set records for deficit spending, while the only one that brought us a balanced budget was the Democrat. Still, even if a Republican is elected I would think the excesses of the current administration would have to be scaled back.

Bill Clinton achieved a surplus, so i would imagine he would strongly recommend Hilary to do the same. John McCain really wants to balance teh budget, but the only way to do this is by raising taxes like the Omnibus Act created by Bill Clinton. McCain will not do this. With the wars it's very difficult to do this even if you cut numerous social programs.

Clinton didn't actually fix anything, he just took Social Security funds and used them as general funds to balance the budget. Just another accounting scam. We're $54.6 TRILLION in total debt, as of the end of 2006, and a 100% tax rate won't do a damn thing to help.

Congress controls laws to balance the budget. So it was the Republican controlled Congress that balanced the budget during Clinton.
He just signed the bill
