Need some help with a new laptop - question about batter power?

I just bought a new laptop yesterday, it was the last one of this model the store had and off the shelf ex-display. The laptop had been plugged in while they did a settings restore and than I plugged it in when I went to use it 1st time, later when I went to another room and it said battery power was only 40%. I than plugged it in for about 4 hours last night before putting it to stand-by mode. When checked the battery level this morning it was again 40% even though it had been plugged in for about 30-40mins. I have now been charging it for close to 2 hours and its only 46% - is there something wrong with the battery cause I dont remember my other laptops being this slow to recharge, should I take it back to the store?

Normally I wouldn't by ex-display but I'm traveling and have a limited budget and its just for checking emails basically - got computers at home for proper work. I did run the battery down completely last night

Something is indeed wrong with the battery. It shouldn't take so long to charge. Remember that some cheap laptops use up their batteries fast, and that you should only recharge your batteries when they are almost out (say, 5%) to extend the life.

I don't know, batteries can be fickle things. Set the laptop to always on, go the the power settings in Control Panel and set it for always on to let the battery run down then try charging it. While you shouldn't have to do that, the battery may need reconditioning and that should do it. If not, take it back to the store and tell them the battery doesn't work. I also would not have bought a display model laptop, never buy anything that used to be on display, ever.

If it's under warranty, you might be able to wrangle a new battery out of the manufacturer. I would try that, call their tech support or email them and provide them with your model number, purchase date, purchase location (or any information they ask for), tell them the battery is defective and you want a new battery. If they don't cooperate, tell them you will return it and buy another brand, this worked for me a while back with an HP laptop I had, they sent me an extended life battery and let me keep my old one.
