Is it free to e-file if not what are the cheapest options for preparing other people's taxes?
Can a preparer efile directly through the irs for free? I work for a company preparing taxes, but we can only do 2 free returns per year. I have lots of friends and family that would like me to do their taxes for them and I would feel bad charging them especially what the company I work for charges. What are some other options if it is not free?

There are plenty of online options that wil have available free e-file options or options with minimal charges. Most free e-file operations have income limitations. I used Turbo Tax online last year. It was relatively easy to use, found one additional deduction resulting in an additional $90 refunded, and it only cost me $9.95 to file my federal return.. Granted it would have cost me more if I lived in a state which had income tax, but I don't.

The IRS website has some e-file sites that may help you. Most are free depending on the total gross income of the person you are filing for.

I do tax work for others, but to the best of my knowledge, one can e file his/her own taxes, but whether it is legal to do it for another person is questionable. Best to file by paper when doing work for others. This way you have a hard copy and provide one to the client.
