Plants with bugs?

I've read some of the answers here BUT, I have little tiny bugs, brown in color, that are in the dirt in my potted plants. My plants stay in the house. They seem to be getting worse. I'm not sure they are doing harm but something tells me they shouldn't be there either. The fact they seem to be getting to the other plants isn't sitting well with me. The last thing I want to do is kill the plants.

Thanks for the help folks.

Going to the local nursery is a good idea to find answers. However, even if you make sure the bugs are sealed in a ziplock bag it's always best to just take a very good picture and take that in instead. Nurseries and pretty much anyone who sells plants aren't too thrilled when someone brings them the live bug itself since there's always a chance that it can get loose and cause problems with their plants. It's a mistake I made only once and it seemed to really annoy the saleperson.

I'm not positve, but from what you are describing it reminds me of fungus gnats. They pretty much stay on the dirt and don't do very much flying. They sort of run across the dirt. The gnat itself won't really hurt the plants, but the larvae will. They eat the roots and it can eventually kill the plant. They love moist dirt and it's a great place for them to lay eggs. I've listed a link below that tells you about them. You can also try spreading sand across the top of your dirt in your pots. It will help to get rid of fungus gnats. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I would put some in a ziploc bag and make sure you seal it tight. Take it to a local nursery, whether a large on or one at your local hardware store and ask one of the people working in the nursery to find out what you can and should do about your infestation.

quite possibly fungal gnats which love to breed in moist potting mix indoors. they will develop wings and fly from pot to pot
