a nice black dress that is age appropriate with heals would work. dark dark blue would look too. One that is sliming and sorta strait but classic - show off your colar bone is always formal, attractive, and never inappropriate. think aurdey heburn without the huge diamonds- dress to your figure and something that flatters you and you feel wonderful in. think polotics, think classy. Wear jewlery - perhaps a sparling bracelt ? or a classic strand of real pearls? but nothing gaudy. Wear a wrap or a shawl if the evening is coool. Wear your hair nicely, in simple curls, or an elegant bun Its formal if its black tie but since it is political be safe and dont do anything to flashy. Makeup should be natural looking, warm hues work good for about everyone. Youa re going to have to go shopping. In polotics black and blue are the safest of safe colors and they look good on everyone!
You lucky duck - I never get to dress up! I want to go to a ball ! I am 20 and I assume you are much older, but sticking with the classics is always a safe bet

Go with a very classic black or navy blue. Keep it understated and simple in the dress but give it a little flare with your jewelery. Don't worry you will be fine and remember to enjoy yourself!
