You can dry clean a comforter. A comforter can also be washed. Depending on the materials and the size, they can be laundered in a large capacity washing machine either at the Laundromat or at home. The single bed size comforter, that has a Machine washable label, fits into a regular size top loading washer, with an agitator, however, it is best to have it sit in a tub full of sudsy water for about 5 min or more depending on how soiled it may be , then agitate no more than 1 min. and rinse, when cycle is complete it goes in the Dryer with a few tennis balls to fluff up the batting or down. It works with the front loading washers as well . The Larger sizes queen and king size if washable would need a larger capacity washer found in Loundromats.

Well check the label on the comforter. If it says dry clean. I would recommend it. If it says wash take it a where there is a big washer to wash it. I work at a dry cleaner.

read the care tag. If it says dry clean only i would do so. Otherwise I would wash it in the machine by itself on cold (unless its white). Dry on a low setting and rearrange it often to keep it from burning in the dryer.

No. But if it is very large you will need a large machiene to wash it. Sometimes I don't feel like going to a laundry mat to do mine, and it just doesn't smell a clean. My machiene is not big enough for a queen comforter. So it is really best to go wash these at a laundry mat so it has plenty of room for washing.

It depends if it has feathers/down/wool filling or synthetic. The synthetic ones can just be washed in the washing machine, the others go lumpy and need dry cleaning.

I wash and dry my down comforter. Hint: tennis shoes in dryer to fluff the down.
