we recently found a dog?

we have recently had a dog make it's way on our property. He is a golden retriever, active, eats great and is playful. After only one day at our home (outside), we have decided to keep him. Problem is ~ he had a collar on, and it has begun to embed in his neck. I removed the collar, cleaned it with peroxide, and put some neosporin on the sore. Will it be OK? I also gave him some antibiotics and will continue to do so. I am an animal lover, and will do what it takes to make him better. He is SO friendly. He likes to play fetch, and so good with the kids when they go outside to play with him. I think that he will be OK as long as I keep nursing his wound. He didn't have any tags that would indicate who the previous owner is. Will it be OK with proper care?

God Bless You, for taking this dog in and taking such great care of him. I wish there was more people like you. I would just keep doing what your doing, for the wound. He should be ok! The only thing, that I would really be concerned about would be, how long the collar was inbetted, before you took it off, and the possibility of infection if it was deeply imbedded. If you can. I would just take him to the vet and have him checked out, and also ask about shots. That poor dog, is so lucky to have found such a loving person to take care of him. I hope everything turns out ok! Good Luck!

Other than the embedded collar what kind of shape was he in-were his teeth clean was he healthy weight wise? It sounds as if he has been well trained so someone cared about him. I would try to find the owner (check with the Humane Society, newspaper listings see if someone is looking for him). I would be totally heartbroken if my dog was missing. As an animal lover you would understand how much he may mean to someone.

Otherwise, you seem to have been doing exactly the right thing, carewise. You should take him to the vet though to be doubly sure. Also, he might have a microchip to find his owner.

You should take the dog to the vet just to check him out and see if is is infected etc.

I think its best to put some notices up about the dog, someone may have lost him and could be searching for him, it wouldn't be too nice to keep a dog that has an actual owner.

If no reply is from the posters then contact the local dog shelter/pound to see if any one has asked if a golden retriever has been brought in.

Its always best to see if the dog has owners fist before bringing a dog into the family!

The dog has to go to the vet no matter what, because you want to get his shots brought up to date. I'm sure his neck will heal, although he may have a scar. The vet will clean up any infection. Don't give him people antibiotics, the dosage will be too high for a dog.

I'd keep an eye on it...If there is any change (for worst) take him to a vet ASAP..After a few days if it looks like its healing, it will probably be ok..Good for you on deciding to keep him. Even if he did have tags, I wouldnt return him..If his collar was imbedded, he was probably ties up all the time, and not looked on. Best of luck to ya

If he had tags and an embeded collar I still would not return it. They dont deserve it! Keep it clean and see a vet, he should be ok. He probable thinks he hit the lottery when he found you!

It will most likely be okay. You seem to be doing all you should be, except for taking the dog to a vet. You need to do that as soon as possible. There could be an underlying problem and even though the dog is on antibiotics, there could be dead muscle tissue/skin and may need to be removed. Please take the dog to a vet.

And kudos to you for taking him in! :-D

that dog must of been lost for a while then if the collar became embedded. Your best bet is to do the right thing and post some signs for a few weeks and if no one claims him then he is yours to keep. I mean what if there is a family looking for there beloved pet??? Make sure you take him to the vet to get a check up and see if he has a mirco chip.

You did the right thing about the collar. yes it will. You need to get him into Agility, Obedience and Rally through AKC. You can get him a ILP number to be able to show him in these things. You will need to go to (akc.org). To get more infromation. The hair sould grow back over the wound area.

Just to be sure take it to the vet and make sure the wound isnt that bad. And take it to the vet to idenifiy whos dog it is.
