i found free tax software online. is there a catch?

I came across this website offering free tax software to prepare your tax return for free. It even claims that you can e-file for free. I've always used TurboTax and paid for the software and to e-file. Has anyone ever used this software? Is there a catch?

I have used taxact for four years without a problem. The catch here is if you want to get a refund faster you pay a small fee. Thats it. If you dont want to pay then they send a check in the mail. The efiling part is probably exactly like the previous answer using the irs website.

The government is trying to cut down on paperwork, and is encouraging efiling.

There's always a catch! No one is going to put that much time and effort into a program for free. Also, if it really is free, make sure its not a hoaxe, or a joke.

My advise is to save a whole lot of money by paying a proffessional to do it right the first time. Cleaning up mistakes or getting them in too late, will always cost you more than some free program.

This site is a SCAM, do not use it. If you read their so-called "license Agreement" it refers to fees for their services, and YOU are completely responsible in any case, as in their internet protocol not being able to be read by the IRS servers. Your only "remedy" in case of failed services is a refund of their fees charged you and it refers to a refund or credit of their Billing of you.

SO NOT free. Use the IRS site as others have advised. Cool that you checked this out first!

I'm not sure if I would trust all my most sensitive personal data to a free on-line service. They must get some income from somewhere to stay in business. "data mining" perhaps?

E-filing fed taxes is free. Anyone that tries to charge for that will be in serious trouble.

I would think so. Ask someone who is really good at computers.
