Is Mah Jongg a easy game to learn how to play?

There is a local community college that is offering a class in beginning mah jongg and am interested in maybe signing up for it.

Does any one have any experience in playing the game or learning the basics?

Thanks very much.

It is a very easy game to play! I had no idea there were classes to learn how to play it! Of course I have played it on the internet though. So it is probably a little different!

Mah Jongg is actually pretty complicated, in that there are so many variations of rules, particular in how the game is scored.

The general play of the game is similar between variations, and is not really so difficult. It resembles rummy played with colored tiles instead of cards. The idea is to build 4 sets of 3 tiles each and a pair. Each set of tiles can be a run (for instance 3,4,5 of bamboo) or a set of 3 (5,5,5 of bamboo). The trick is that some combinations score more than others. The most common combination resembles a flush in poker, where all the tiles in your hand are the same suit.

Here's a link to a helpful website. It describes all the different rule formats. Note that different sets of rules use different numbers of tiles! Some use flowers and seasons, some don't. Some use wilds (jokers), some don't.

Good luck. We play a version called Hong Kong Old Style (HKOS) because the scoring is easiest and there are not that many "special hands". Special hands are unique hands that score many points. Some versions have lots of special hands that you would need to learn.

I've played mah-jong before and I'd say that it's somewhat similiar to poker and gin, just with a few twists. There's a point system and that's classified by how you go out. You match tiles or you can go up in number (for example, 3 matching tiles or 3 tiles that go up in number such as 2,3, and 4. It's not quite as easy as poker and gin, but it is a fun game once you get the hang of it. It's very big in asia and a lot of people do gamble with mah-jong. Also it's similiar to gin because you can pick up the tile of the player before you (since you do discard a tile at the end of your turn). Well, hope that helps. :)

Also, don't confuse the matching tile game of mah-jong that you seen in bars and on yahoo.
