How can I get from UK to Austrailia without flying?
I want to travel from the UK to Australia without flying, perhaps going via the states and coming back via Russia. Anyone done something similar?
I think you can get a boat to the states, a train across the country then a frieght ship to Australia. Also coming back across Russia could use the Trans Siberian Express. Might take a while but would be an adventure. - Just wondered if anyone has done any part of this trip.

Actually, apart from the hugely expensive liner travel, it has always been possible to pay for passage on freighters. You can find an example of this at:

Australia and New Zealand passenger sevices (on freighters) can be found at:

They give examples of lots of different routes apart from going via the USA. However, they do warn you that they book up quite far in advance.
The Trans-Siberian is an amazing experience, and I once met a chap in Northern Pakistan, who was try to motor cycle his way across Asia (wonder if he made it!?). You are only limited by your imagination (and I guess from the postings here that a lot of folks are fairly limited! :-) Luckily they won't be the ones you're sharing a cabin with!!
Happy travels!

There's a book by Peter Moore called The Wrong Way Home. He went overland from UK to Australia. It's tricky but possible. How will you get across the Atlantic Ocean though?
I've travelled from Japan to the UK but that was reasonably easy. Just the Trans-Siberian across Russia and then trains through Europe.
EDIT: Why the negativity from other posts? It's not easy but it's possible and very rewarding. It's a great way to see different countries, cultures and people rather than flying over them at 30,000 feet, eating a packet of aeroplane peanuts. Travelling overland isn't 'half-brained'. It's the experience of a lifetime.
