Opening sealed envelopes without ripping them?

I played an adventure game as a child where a puzzle was solved involving opening an envelope without ripping it; it was put in a microwave with a jar of water, and it opened.

Then, I got a e-mail forward of random tips saying an incorrectly sealed envelope can be opened by putting it in a freezer.

I haven't actually tried doing ANY of these, but from experience, can any of you tell me whether this actually works (*any* of these methods)?

Regarding the first option when you put the envelope within a microwave containing water.........since the air is very moist inside, the envelope paper absorbs moisture (at elevated temperature) while the glue doesnot absorb moisture. So due the expansion the paper is loosened from the grip of the gum!

I haven't tried this but have applied hot water on that area of the envelope where its pasted........it works fine(try it)

Regarding the second option when you put the envelope within a (deep) freezer.........I think it will work too ( especially if it has air gaps). If the paste is of bad quality it will become brittle and you can open the envelope with ease!

Put a pan of water on the stove, hold the envelope above the steam when it begins to boil. Gently lift up.

For envelopes with self-adhesive flaps, the rubbery gum will dissolve if you dab lighter fuel on the flap. The fuel evaporates.

I got this tip from a second-hand dealer who used it to lift off those lot number stickers from things he bought at auction sales.

Steam should work as the glue is controlled by moisture.
