Just a 30 year old Canadian guy who loves tutoring math. I am considering teaching someday. As much as I love helping people understand mathematics, please refrain from e-mailing me your question in private. It's not fair that I should give special treatment to some and not others. To be blunt, I am not your personal tutor (NYPT = Not Your Personal Tutor). While I cannot guarantee to always be correct, I can (almost) guarantee a step-by-step solution where my mistake can easily be traced. Spotting of this error alone separates those truly willing to learn from those merely wanting the answer to their homework problem. And, while I'm here, 0.999(repeating) *is* equal to 1. Why do I keep getting mail for the same question where my answer was chosen?

Hi there,
I have a digital camera Canon Powershot SD1000, and I lost the manual. I purchased a 4GB memory card which promised 1 hour 40 minutes of MPEG2-VIDEO recording time (704 x 480 pixels, 5 MBPS) and 19 hours of MPEG-4 video recording time (320 x 240 pixels, 384 KBPS).
When I started recording, I expected to be able to take at least an hour of video .. when it turned out I was able to take video for only 12 minutes (I got a Memory Card full error). Since I lost the manual, I have no idea how to change the setting in order for me to record longer video.
Can someone either link me to the manual, or tell me step by step how to change the video recording quality? I would really appreciate it.

I'm looking for a centralized chatroom, either on mIRC or elsewhere, where people can make requests to others for battling/trading in Pokemon Pearl/Diamond. I've been unsuccessful thus far; all I've found are forums where people post their friend code. What *I* would want is either a site with people who use WiFi *AND* MSN Messenger, or a chatroom.
Does anybody know of such a site? Does anyone know of an IRC server and channel name? Alternatively, does anyone who has windows live messenger interested in battling/trading wish to send me a private message?

The address of the Maplewood Inn is 1780 County Road D East.
I tried the greyhound bus station in Minneapolis, MN, and it is 25 minutes away from the site. I tried the greyhound bus station in Saint Paul, MN, and it is 15 minutes away from the site. I used mapquest both times to determine the distance. Is there a better stop than the one in Saint Paul, MN?
I am hoping for someone who is more knowledgeable about the surrounding area of Minneapolis/St Paul to give me the best Greyhound station to stop at, which is the minimum distance (timewise) from the Best Western Maplewood Inn. There seems to be many Greyhound stations in Minnesota.

I used to watch an old cartoon as a kid, but I can't remember what it was called. It involved "bots", the creator of these bots along with his team of his own bots he called "boyz", and his little sister. At one point in the cartoon, we would be asked to put on our 3D glasses. I watched this cartoon on the Canadian network YTV.
I searched wikipedia's article on YTV and I have no clue listed it is, and I've perused the list twice. If anyone has a better memory than I do, please tell me the name of that show.

I've recently discovered something while solving a question; that
√( 3 - 2√(2)) = √(2) - 1
There was no way I could have guessed this, because I've learned no method of algebraic manipulation to reduce a radical-within-a-radical to just a single radical. I know it's verifiable, and has to do with 3 - 2√2 being expressible as a squared term with radicals in it (in fact, it's [√(2) - 1]^2), but does anybody know if there exists a "complete the square" method when simplifying radicals-within-a-radical type questions?
What is a method to determine perfect square radicals? For instance, 3 - 2√2 is a perfect square radical (as shown above), but (2 - √2) is not (and therefore √(2 - √(2)) cannot be reduced any further.
(I put "perfect square" in quotes because perfect squares normally are in the realm of integers, where radicals are clearly irrational numbers).

Dr Spock believes that arctan(x) is a multivalued function in the range of 0 to 360 degrees, in that
arctan(√3) = 60 degrees of 240 degrees
However, I believe that arctan(x) is a function that returns a single value, with a range of -90 degrees to 90 degrees. I believe that
arctan(√3) = 60 degrees

Who is correct? I'm more interested in the truth than about who is correct, and he did validly site sources.
I've always assumed arctan(x) returned one value because if it returned multiple values, then its derivative would be multivalued too. Also, "multivalued function" sounds like an oxymoron to me. However, Dr Spock did bring up valid references.
Is arctan(x) a multivalued function? I'd like to know if what I've learned from high school and university is correct.

There was an issue regarding an earlier question where someone interpreted x^x^x as (x^x)^x (i.e. solved left to right). However, I interpreted at x^(x^x) (i.e. solved right to left).
The reason why I believe it to be worked from right to left is because, if it were worked left to right,
x^x^x = x^x^2
And I firmly believe this shouldn't be the case because its syntax is confusing.
However, I can see how both can be true. My question is, is there any hard rule forcing exponents within exponents to be worked from left to right? Right to left? Not even BEDMAS (Brackets exponents division multiplication addition subtraction) helps, because we have exponents. We also have rules that makes us solve addition from left to right, but there isn't anything stated about exponents left to right.
If anyone can explain how x^x^x works and what proof there is to support it, please let me know. This would make the difference if we wanted to solve for the derivative of y = x^x^x.

Someone posted a very interesting question earlier today; they inquired where the sequence 123456789 occurs in the decimal representation of PI. My intuition is that, since PI has an infinite number of digits after the decimal point that neither terminate nor repeat, that this sequence must exist somewhere.
This alone has got me curious; do ALL sequences of digits exist in PI? Can it be proven that a certain sequence of digits does *not* exist in PI? Does the sequence 111111111 exist in PI or will it NEVER exist in PI?
An insightful answer will be appreciated!

I'm currently experiencing an annoyance with Windows XP. I purchased a computer direct from Dell, which means they've installed all this other junk in addition to Windows XP itself.
As a result, I'm unable to drag shortcuts onto my taskbar and that might possibly be a root cause. Can anyone tell me how to enable shortcuts onto my taskbar? In addition, they are also these dots that, when I put my mouse pointer over it, it tells me I can drag left or right, but when I try, it doesn't let me.
Any help will be appreciated!

I played an adventure game as a child where a puzzle was solved involving opening an envelope without ripping it; it was put in a microwave with a jar of water, and it opened.
Then, I got a e-mail forward of random tips saying an incorrectly sealed envelope can be opened by putting it in a freezer.
I haven't actually tried doing ANY of these, but from experience, can any of you tell me whether this actually works (*any* of these methods)?

Suppose that x^2 = 1. Then it follows that the real solutions of x are x = {1, -1}.
Now, suppose that x^3 = 1. In this case, x has only one real solution: x = 1.
For x^4 = 1, x has two solutions once more: x = {1, -1}.
It appears that for odd integers n, x^n = 1 has one real solution.
For even integers n, x^n = 1 has TWO real solutions.
My question is regarding values of n that do not fall under that category. Particularly, if n isn't an integer, yielding two cases:
1) What if n is a non-integer fraction? Will x have one real solution, two real solutions, or neither?
2) What if n is an irrational number (such as e, pi)? How many real solutions (if any) will x^n = 1 have?
I ask this to satisfy my mathematical curiosity, and if anybody can help me by answering those questions I would be grateful. Please give me as much details a possible when answering, as I'm interested in the mathematics behind it.
Note that I'm talking only about the REAL solutions.

Suppose that for a particular function,
f(xy) = f(x)f(y)
Is there a name for functions which have this property? I'm thinking multiplicative but that can't be it. I thought of this when the sigma function in number theory had this property.
