Windows XP shortcuts in taskbar?

I'm currently experiencing an annoyance with Windows XP. I purchased a computer direct from Dell, which means they've installed all this other junk in addition to Windows XP itself.

As a result, I'm unable to drag shortcuts onto my taskbar and that might possibly be a root cause. Can anyone tell me how to enable shortcuts onto my taskbar? In addition, they are also these dots that, when I put my mouse pointer over it, it tells me I can drag left or right, but when I try, it doesn't let me.

Any help will be appreciated!

You can copy the shortcuts to the quick launch location.

Do this by clicking Start > Run > paste in the following:

    %HOMEPATH%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

And verify quick launch is in use by right clicking on the blue task bar > toolbars> Verify 'Quick launch' is checked.

The dots you see are the sliders for quick launch. If you have nothing in the quick launch then it won't let you drag it. Once you get some in there you will be able to drag it.

If you don't like the dots and want them to go away (after you have it the size you want) right click the blue task bar and select "Lock the Taskbar"

    Good luck!

ok first of all the dots are there because the bar is unlocked. to lock it right click it and follow the path to locking it up.....trust me its pretty easy. to get rid of all that other junk on the task bar you need a proggy like system mechanic and then customize the starup programs list or stop the process in the background. to add stuff simply right click it again anywhere there is nothing down by the clock and then go to the properties tab.

Well, you can try deleting the junk. Go into My Computer and then click Add or Remove Programs. In there remove whatever you don't need.
