How many people believe that christopher columbus discovered america?

I read some time back that good old Columbus didn't discover america but indeed ran into the west indies. He diddn't finish the trip with the three ships, he passed away during his journey. And a black man aboard the ship made the first contact with native americans, but columbus got the credit. friendly replies only.

Not I. The Vikings did. And besides, he thought he found India, not America.

Christopher Columbus was obviously not the first person to discover the Americas. Case and point, there were other people already there. Christopher Columbus was just acted as the catalyst, for lack of a better word, for the "European invasion" of the Americas.

Columbus never "discovered" America. The Native Americans were here before he was. He was just the first one to bring the news back to Europe.

Personally, I am in the Leif Ericson camp. However, for another fascinating theory, read 1421 - The Year the Chinese Discovered America by Gavin Menzies. He postulates that the great Chinese treasure fleets uring the time of Zheng He actually made it to the Americas.

I dont beleive he did. I heard a theory that someone ran into a Spaniard and his African companion wandering around Mexico before Columbus came to "the new world". But he couldnt discover anything that already had people living there regardless. So it really just pisses me off that people give him credit for that instead of credit for reintroducing it to the rest of the world.

Columbus didn't discover America! Leif Ericson discovered it first. But to be really technical, the natives discovered the Americas after they crossed the land bridge.

I would say first graders. We learned about that, but I know now how inaccurate 1492, sailed the ocean blue is. The Asians crossing the Bering Strait found America, and Leif Erikson was the first Europeon to find it- Not Christopher Coumbus.

It wasn't Christopher Columbus you are right about that. North America was discovered by a gentleman named Leif Ericsson.

founded by Mr. Erickson and named for Amerigo Vespucci, figure that one out.

I think Columbus is given credit because he brought the first settlers for the colonies, and it started a wave of immigrants.
