Who else hates going to the dentist? What part of the visit do you hate the most?

For me, it's the drilling. I'm always afraid I'll get my tongue in the way and he'll drill a whole through my tongue. I don't care how much they tell me I can't do it because they are holding my tongue etc. I feel like I can and will do it. It's an extreme phobia of mine! I sit in the chair with my back arched the whole time he's drilling.

Update:

Sorry, I mean hole not whole!

    I'm a dentist.

99% of the time, appointments are made difficult by the patients, not the doctor.

Do you want to know how to make your dental appointment as quick and easy as possible?

Follow your doctor's instructions when he/she is working on you.

When he says "open wide", open wide and keep your mouth open wide! Some patients seem to forget that in order for us to see and reach their teeth we have to go through their lips and between their jaws. Working on teeth is easy...if they weren't stuck in peoples' heads. Unfortunately, we repeatedly deal with patients who repeatedly and gradually shut their damn mouths in the middle of treatment and at the same time expect us to miraculously perform the work on their teeth without being able to see inside their mouths.

This also applies to giving injections, by the way. Nerve blocks are often missed because patients can be such chicken-sh*ts that they close their jaws, flinch, and pull away while we're trying to give the injection, and as a result make us miss.

Flinching and pulling away during an injection indicates to me that the patient feels that they are being needlessly hurt in some way rather than having a disease treated with anesthesia for their comfort. I have zero sympathy for these patients.

As I said, if you want to make your dental appointment the most pleasant experience possible, don't talk, follow the doctor's instructions, and keep still.

One thing that I USED to hate was the rubber dam (they have latex-free ones too). Now I love it - for pretty much the same reason you hate going to the dentist. You should see if he'll use one on you whenever possible.

It keeps everything out of your mouth and throat so you can still swallow with it on. It also keeps your tongue out of the way of the prep area so they can't chop it to bits AND, since it's keeping your tongue and saliva and everything away from where they're filling, they get it done in so much less time so you don't have to spend any more time in the chair than absolutely necessary. =)

I always hated it and was scared to death so I wouldn't go. I had a bad experience the first time I went, so I never went back till around 5 years later I was really having trouble. Last year my teeth were getting so loose I was afraid they would fall out, and I actually lost a couple front teeth. It was gonna cost way too much to try to fixed up what I had left so I ended up having them all taken out. I'll probly be getting some fake ones soon. I hope they look nice at least.

Every part of it from the phone call to going there Getting out is the best. Wish someone would develope a kit for we chickens or an acid that would deteriorate the decay then put in a fill to hold it. Then the dentists would be out of jobs., except for surgeries.

I hate my nerve "wiring" because of the way my nerve endings are setup in my mouth I end up needing 2x the usual whatever it is that a dentist uses to numb you up. I know this because of my 11 fillings, the crown located on a root canel and the extrated tooth spot that needs a false tooth inserted. also I really don't like the after affect of the numbing medicine because I end up taking about 3-4 hour nap to get it out of my system. The (novicane?) makes me sleepy after the apointment; because of how much I get dosed with.

I hate getting the NEEDLE they use to freeze your mouth,it just give me the willys. The last time I got my mouth frozen or so I thought it was frozen,I could feel the dentist hit the nerves and it hurt like heck.He put alot of freezing in but I guess my metabolism worked too fast and ended up only being a little bit frozen and having your teeth fixed without being frozen isn't fun at all.

I have to go Monday. I'm pissed... I don't wanna go! I hate when they clean your teeth with that crappy tasting stuff. And I especially hate when they scrape the plaque/tartar off my teeth cause the lady that always does it pokes my gums and makes them bleed! =\ My dentist says to "brush and floss my teeth better" I already do it twice a day, so those biotches need to stfu. ^_^

I actually LOVE going to the dentist. He's really friendly, and nice! Yes, I get teeth pulled there, but it's not very painful, because, well, for one thing, I have had nine teeth pulled, so maybe I'm used to it, but he does it very gently, and with minimal pain. Besides, after getting oral surgery (the worst pain of my life) and othodontist work, going to the dentist is nothing! I actually enjoy it!

I hate being in the dental chair but i try to take my mind off of it. I listen to music but I've for the most part gotten over it since i went into the field. I try to help my patients when they are scared.
