don't use a sqaure! use a pentagon(5 sides for the 2/5) and heptagon(7 sides for 3/7) and draw straight lines from and connecting the pionts(angles in each shape. that should divide them into 5 and 7 sections repectively. actuall its easier to double and use 10 sided and 14 sided then just shade 4 parts for the 10 sided and 6 parts for the 14 sided.

How about drawing a circle as one of the shapes, then divide it into 7 equal slices, then just shade 3 of the 7 slices. Then 5 equal slices and shade 2 of them for the 2/5ths.
Then perhaps a rectangle and measure equal 7ths and 5ths colouring the correct amount.
Then a triangle, measure the hypotenuse and draw lines up from that to the point at the top, and again shade the correct amount of sections. If his homework book has graph paper or boxes on the page, it'll all be even easier to do.

To shade in a certain amount of a certain shape....
divide the shape into equal sized portions to correspond to the fraction size and then shade the required amount.
A square may be tricky but it's not impossible.
Just remember - equal sizes.
If the square gives you a little trouble, use a shape with the same amount of sides as the fraction.
3/7ths? use a 7 sided shape.
Get the picture?

Work out the area of the shape. eg 10cm squared. Divide this figure by the lower figure of your fraction (5ths or 7ths) and then multiply the result by the upper figure (2 or 3).
This will tell you how many square CMs to shade in.
