Do you feel the urge to push during labor?
One of my friends told me that she just had her natural urge to push during labour did the job for her. I didn't really feel the urge to push during my labour the last time eventhough it was a natural birth (no epidural) I pushed only when I was told to push. Now I'm 32 weeks along and wondering how many of you feel the "urge" and what is the right technique for it (if there's any). Thanks girls.

I felt the urge to push with my first and second baby. But with my 3rd I had no urge to push and was expecting it, so when the nurse told me to push I said no, and she asked me why, I told her I didnt have that urge yet. So it was weird for me to be pushing without having that urge, but I guess every time is different. I had all natural child births too so I dont know why I didnt feel any urge the last time. I would rather feel the urge though because it just would happen for me.

Nature naturally provides some women with a break between when they are fully dilated and when they are ready to push. In fact contractions can become much less intense and this would be the WORST time to try to push.
Probably if you had waited (ie if you hadn't had some doctor telling you it was time, if you were alone and had no way of knowing how dilated you were) after 15-30 minutes you would have felt the urge to push.
Source(s): Edited to add. Couldn't remember what it was called. Anyway here it is "Natural Alignment Plateau" "Resting Phase or Natural Alignment Plateau – (0 – 20+ minutes) What Happens during this Stage Cervix is fully dilated The baby may be repositioning or molding Contractions may space out, subside, or seem to stop The uterus is “collecting itself” for upcoming effort Resting phase may not occur if baby is very low Mother becomes clear-headed, optimistic, and determined; wonders where the contractions went Staff may want mother to begin pushing even without contraction What Partner/Dad can do to Help Encourage to push as she feels the urge (after the cervix is completely dilated); not per staff’s instructions unless there is distress to mother or baby (Many cesareans are caused by “premature pushing”, causing attendants to believe that labor is not progressing, or that the baby is “too big”, when in fact it simply isn’t time for birth.) Be patient, your baby may need a little while longer. Be patient; remind mother of the resting phase, encourage her to relax and take advantage of rest. If staff tells mother to push without the urge, ask questions from “informed consent” card and suggest she wait for the urge to push if mom and baby are fine. If 20 minutes pass without pushing contractions suggest mother change positions (hands and knees, squat, supported squat, any upright positions.) If there is no hurry, you may continue to rest as long as mother and baby are without distress." http://www.childbirthrevolutions.com/overview.php - Wicked GoodLv 61 decade ago
I always felt the urge to push, without a doubt. With our first they had expected I would push a long time, I didn't. Then they wanted me to not push while they got everything 'ready'. There is no way not to push at that point!
Being sitting up with your legs pulled way back makes pushing more effective. My husband always got behind me on the bed at the Labor & Delivery room and pulled back on both my legs. It was great because in between pushing I could lean back on him. The Bradley Method book has instructions on this.
Congratulations I wish you all the best!

i definitely felt the urge to push...actually I felt it before they would even let me. I was completely fine and then all of the sudden I felt like I just had to get her out of me RIGHT THEN. They made me wait for a few more minutes until my doctor was ready and then she came right out after only a few pushes. every labor is different though. I am 35 1/2 weeks with my second and things may be totally different this time. Just do what feels right for you. If you have the urge then tell them you wanna push and they will probably let you unless its too soon. Or if you dont then wait for them to tell you...your baby will be here soon after that no matter what.

I wish I could answer this question but I have had all my babies by c-section ( wished i could have went natural) I did ask my sister in law and she said she had a epidural and that she had the urge to push. She said just do what ever the doctor and nurses tell you and you will be fine!!!
Sorry not much help!!!!!

Yep felt the urge with all 3 of my babies. Not sure if there is a "right" technique but I just followed my body's signals. It felt better to bear down and push so I did. I never had to push more than twice with any of my babies.

My doctor said pushing should be like having a bowel movement.
You use those muscles.
But, I had my epidural too late and felt the heaviness there, but didn't feel the urge.
I only pushed when they counted and told me to.

When you first go into labor, you will want to push. Agreed. However, you shouldn't. Your body is going through its natural motion of moving the baby down the short birth canal. While your muscles contract and move the baby (like a snake slithering), you will naturally want to push.
However, you should wait until just before "crowning" . The baby is now at the exit of the birth canal. If you push way too soon, there's a possibility you push out the mucus membrane or worse off, do something to disturb the baby's journey through the canal.
