There are two traditions as to who wrote the Pentateuch

The traditional view is that they were written by Moses

The modern view is that the five books were written over a long period by various authors and were then grouped together as we have them today

For an unbiased view on both these opinions go to : www.religioustolerance.org/chr_tora.htm

The first five books were written by the prophet Moses. He was inspired by God. Its just like the book of revelations where John was shown things that were to come thereafter.

The stories were passed down verbally from generation to generation and one day the religous leaders or tribal leaders decided to writen them out.

There was a conflict in later times between the Pharasees and the other group over if they should include the still verbal stories (those that had not been written down) or just the existing written ones.

The first 5 books of the bible are collection of four different groups who had different ideas of what god was. These four groups each had unique writing styles and can be identified. They did not write one book each. for example, there are two different versions of the Adam and Eve story at the first of Genesis. The first has Adam and Eve being created at the same time (as it implies) and the second has eve being created second out of Adams rib.

The Pentateuch was compiled during the Babylonian Exlile. It includes several traditions, including some material attributed to Moses. A good part of it was the writing down of oral traditions. It is a "compilation" of several traditions and authors.
