Hi. I have 2 Chiuaua puppies that are ....?
about 4 months old each. They are from the same litter and are brothers. They are always together. Up to this point in time, I have been home with them all day and have given them a lot of human contact. I know they enjoy being held a lot. However, my schedule may soon be changing and they would be left alone for about 8 hours a day in their playpen that is in a hexagon form of 7' by 7' .. lots of area. Naturally, they have food, fresh water, and a potty area. My question is: Since they are used to me being home and giving them human contact throughout the day and evening hours .. will this "ruin" their personalities if they are left alone 8 hours everyday (excluding weekends). They play with each other and sleep together .. but without the human contact for that amount of time, will it change them ?? Thank you for reading this and your answer ! :)

Lot's of people leave their dogs alone for this long, but in my opinion it is a little long. is there any possibility that you could have someone come walk them half way through the day? it would give them some human contact and it would give you piece of mind! if that's not possible, i wouldn't worry too much, many people with dogs work and leave their dogs home, i don't think you need to be concerned about their personalities changing. one thing to do if you can, would be to get them used to you being gone a little at a time so the transition isn't a shock. you don't want to go from being there all the time to suddenly being gone for 8 hours. good luck!

Don't worry, small dogs are happy sleeping and playing with each other. Just that puppies under 6 months old should be fed at least twice a day, so maybe you can feed them before you leave the house and when you get home, instead of just leaving food for them in the playpen. Just leave clean water for them to drink, that should be enough. And some chewy toys/bones. Leaving food in the playpen would cause them to overeat or not eat at all.

I think it would be much harder, if there was only one puppy. The fact that they are brothers and have each others company, helps alot. Just make sure they have lot's of stuffed toys and chew toys, because their teething, to keep them occupied. It won't ruin their personalities, but only get them used to being by themselves. If you can manage to come home at lunchtime, and just check on them, that would help too. When you get home from work, just give them a little extra attention and love and they should be fine. I have #3, 4 month old Chihuahuas, from my other #2 Chihuahuas, that we decided to keep, and I did that with mine. Because they weren't left totally alone, and had each other for company, they did fine.

On Oct. 25, 2006 my Chihuahua had two puppies and wouldn't nurse them. I went from nursing them every two hours to now on solid food. I had been off work (due to a fall), since Sept. and recently went back Jan. 8 of this year ( last week). The only difference is Christmas Eve, I sold her sister. I too worried, but the other one (Sioux), is fine, spoiled but fine. She stays home with her birth mama, they get along great. I think dogs adjust just as well as humans. Good luck!!

They will keep each other company, so don't worry. Are the potty trained? You may need to put a puppy pad for them, especially if you're going to leave the food and water out for them. They will stay with the personality that they already display.Just enjoy them and when you get home play with them.I had my chihuahua for 15 years and she never changed........

No it wont change who they are. Just make sure they have plenty of toys to play with and keep busy. Then when you get home play with them. They have to get used to you being away.
