How to stop bad e-mails from hitting my e-mail box??

My daughter was given a compture for payment of back rent not paid by her room mate. He moved out and she gave us the computer. Her father and myself turned it on and found some very nasty things on it. We turned the computer over to the police department with our names, e-mail addresses and since then we have been recieving some rather elicite e-mails and nasty web sites popping up. I have spammed them but they continue to appear. I have attempted getting ahold of the police detective that took possesion of the computer but to no avail! I want the ugly stuff to stop but daily I recieve this stuff and don't know how to get it to stop. It makes me sick and now I'm wanting to change my e-mail address! I have never looked at anything like this from my own computer or any other computer and none of this ugly stuff started until I turned the other computer over to the police. HELP! What can I do aside from spaming?? Serious answers only please!

First, don't reply to any of the spams, not even to use an "unsubscribe" return address or link. Or to spam them back, for that matter. That'll only open you up to getting even more spam.

Second, changing your e-mail address may end up being the ultimate fix. Just keep it in mind if you're not able to stop the spam.

Third, keep trying to contact that detective. If he won't return your calls, talk to his supervisor. If you still have no luck, see if the police department has anything like a "community relations" contact, and give them a call. Make sure you tell them the names of whoever isn't returning your calls. That last kind of falls into the realm of dirty pool, but if you gotta, you gotta.

Fourth, regardless of how this situation plays out, you might want to consider getting spam filter software. That will at least shunt the majority of the spam e-mail into a junk mail folder where you won't have to look at it.

Finally, if you are getting naughty pop-ups on your screen, your computer may have spyware or some other malware on it. Get a couple of free anti-spyware programs and see if that helps. If they don't make a difference, contact an online anti-spyware forum for help.

Recommended FREE anti-spyware programs (both available on download.com):

    Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE

    SpyBot Search & Destroy

Recommended anti-spyware forums (there are a lot around, these are two that I'm familiar with):

    www.spywarewarrior.com

    www.aumha.org

    Good luck!
