Which is correct – "whatever road you choose" or "whichever road you choose"?

The first sounds somewhat better, but the second seems more correct. Can someone explain the difference?

"Whichever road you choose" is only right. Road is a noun [place].

When you refer to places you don't ask what place but only which place.
