Car registration numbers?

With the new registration system of a twice yearly change e.g 06 for March & 56 for September would I be right in saying that once we get past 2009 then the next decade (2010 to 2019) will have a 6 prefix for the September reg?

On that assumption you woud then have a

7 for 2020 to 2029

8 for 2030 to 2039

9 for 2040 to 2049

What has been suggested for registrations after 2050??

The first U.K registration numbers were one number, followed by one letter (e.g. A1) from 1903.

Then it was two letters, followed by four numbers (e.g. AA 1234) from 1925.

Then it was three letters, followed by three numbers (e.g. ABC 123) from 1934.

Then it was three numbers, followed by three letters (e.g. 123 ABC) from 1954.

Then it was three letters, three numbers and a year letter (e.g. ABC 123A) from 1963.

Then it was a year letter, followed by three numbers, then three letters (e.g. A123 ABC) from 1983.

The new system, which started in 2001 will last until 2049. Given the previous layouts the D.V.L.A. have used, anything is possible...

I think your assumptions are correct.

In 2050 we'll probably adopt the standard system introduced into the United States of Europe a few years earlier.

I'll probably have stopped driving by then, so I won't care. We'll all probably have stopped driving by then anyway as either it will be too damn expensive or only people born on a Tuesday in a month with a Z in it can drive one day every fortnight.

Nice theory, unfortunately DVLA don't do simple things, that is why they have no idea at the moment what is going to happen next. One rumour is they are going to adopt a totally new way of doing things.
