Dell has quite affordable ones that you can customize nicely.

Be weary of deals too good to be true!! Cheap laptops generally mean low-quality parts. Low quality parts mean hard drive failures and overheating. Everything in a laptop is so close together and small that air circulation and good quality fans are necessary to prevent the laptop from overheating (and frying your motherboard, hard drive, video card, etc.).
HOWEVER, finding a good DEAL on one is not impossible.
I would stick with name brands, but don't hesitate to look into their refurbished or 'overstock' items. Dell, HP, Toshiba, IBM, Apple, ect. all have refurbished items available, often at great discounts. You can find these by searching their websites for the 'refurbished' items. (Or calling the company).
Refurbished items are generally well tested to ensure the laptop has been fixed and/or problem resolved. Overstock items are often discounted because of a minor blemish or scratch on the case or accessory.
Also, there are discounts available for individuals who are students, teachers, government officials/workers, or non-profit organizations. Research manufacturer's website for these discounts. (I know Apple discounts $100-200+ on new computers).
Good luck!

I bought a Toshiba at Circuit City on sale for $400.00 in December. 80gb, DVD/CD writer. They usually have them for around that price every once in a while, just be patient and watch all the ads.

No such thing as a good cheap one, unless you can find a good deal on a used one.
