Why does the Mormon Church not allow its members to drink tea?

It comes from a verse of their scripture that says

Doctrine and Covenants 89:9 "And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly."

This is what is known as the "word of wisdom". It includes abstaining from coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco. Technically, Mormons could drink iced tea and iced coffee, but don't. Some even abstain from Coca-Cola.

Oddly enough in an earlier version of the book called the "Book of Commandments" Smith seem to contradict himself concerning the "word of wisdom" about such things.
