First off positioning has nothing to do with why a baby suddenly stops breathing. Suffocation is not SIDS so a baby that dies on its tummy because it was face down in the crib or because of a blanket is not SIDS it is suffocation, not the same thing. They have changed the way they rule a SIDS death and suffocation is suffocation it is no longer considered SIDS. My daughter was on her back and still died of SIDS. I joined a SIDS group shortly after she died and guess what....most of the mothers in my group have also stated that their babies were on their backs, sides, in strollers, swings, etc. There were only a couple on their tummy. If a baby dies on its tummy and it was not suffocation then yeah it was probably SIDS but that baby would have died in any position just like my daughter did. A sudden cesation of breathing has nothing to do with positioning or there would be no babies at all dying other than in just one position. People are so hell bent on this back to sleep stuff that they follow it so cautiously along with everything else they have come up with and then like me their baby dies and they are left saying but I did everything I was supposed to. It doesn't matter what you do. Whatever is causing these babies to stop breathing is beyond our control as parents. It is something you have no control over and if it's going to happen it's going to happen. Your daughter should just enjoy her baby, as should you, and not let this overwhelm you. I've had two more and both of them slept in whatever position they wanted, usually on their stomach, and they are both fine. SIDS has been known to happen up until 1 year but the risk decreases after six months. I know three people in my SIDS group that lost their babies at 10 month and two at 12 months. There are also 2 that lost their baby to SIDS while their baby was awake so it doesn't even have to happen while they are sleeping

I have always been under the impression that newborns were to sleep on their stomachs from day one. The reason for this is due largely in part to the fact that a baby spits up a lot and if for some reason as the parent we were not standing right there, and the baby was on it's back, the baby would choke and quite possibly suffocate. I raised two daughters and never had them sleep on their backs, that is until they were old enough to roll over on their own. If your baby has tummy problems it should be laying on it's tummy while you gently rub it's back.

I'm so very sorry for your loss, my thoughts are with you and your little girl xx Sounds like you are doing a super job though daddy. Feeding 2-3 hourly is a good start. She may be crying because she is perhaps still hungry or has some wind. Give her a rub or gentle pat on the back while she is on your shoulder and this should help bring up the wind. You could also try some Johnston's Lavender massage lotion and rub her little tummy after bath time in a clockwise motion to also help with wind. The lavender will help soothe her and help settle her. Otherwise daddy, you are doing a great job and your little girl needs you more than anything. Give her lots of cuddles and kisses and read to her when she is calm, she will know your voice believe it or not from when she was inside her mummy so she'll know you. Good luck sweetie, things will get easier as time goes on. Hugs and kisses to you both.

well everyone on here will probably blast you for asking the question-
my son slept on his stomach only 3 times when e was under 6 months old- due to the fact that i was terrified of sids. i would not suggest it f you arent going tobe watching her the whole time. they say when a baby can roll over then they can sleep on thier back, but sids is a risk until they are a year old. (sometimes past that) if you hav problems with gas try talking to our doctor about changing formulas or buy mylacon drops to helps get rid of it.

babies can sleep on their side at any age.
definately do not put the baby on her stomach yet! SIDS is still a risk until about 1 year of age.
my daughter is 8 months though and rolls over as soon as she goes to bed, so the only way id be able to keep her on her back is to go in her room every 5 mins all night long....
keep her on her back as long as possible. a very minor decision to make to reduce the risk of SIDS.

It isn't recommended to lay baby down to SLEEP on her stomach. When she can roll over it is fine, that will be in about 4-5 months. To reduce the risk of SIDS, doctors advise letting babies sleep on their backs. If you are concerned about her gas, consider Soy Formula and feel free to get some gas drops, which are safe to give at each feeding. Try Mylicon.

Maybe during the day when YOU are awake and watching her....but for night time sleeping (when YOU are asleep) back is better...side is fine right now too....roll up a baby blanket and place it about half way down in front of her (away from her face) ....and another rolled up in back of her to keep her on her side...whenever she learns to roll herself over...she can sleep whichever way she wants

You can let your child sleep on there side at about 6 to 7 months. or when they start to roll over on there own.

my daughter slept on her side from the day i brought her home, i tryed to get her to sleep on her back but she wouldnt she always went on her side, so i would put a blanket in front of her so she couldnt roll on her belly, she is 8 months old now and she sleeps on her belly however i put her in the crib she goes right on her belly, i wouldnt suggest putting your baby on her belly yet but try her side

I know they say babies should sleep on their backs, but in the hospial they put them on their sides (what if they spit up??).....My son always slept on his side, then when he was like 3-4 months he'd roll to his stomach....
