Why should prisoners receive better healthcare?
Prisoners receive anything they need in our government run programs for inmates. If they have Cancer, they can get the best treatments and drugs. The same goes for any ailment including gunshots and fractures , which they have asked for most likely in the first place. They aren't contributing to society, but are actually sucking up our resources which we all work so very hard for. Why should the inmates get better care than my father who can't get medicine to help his blood counts in his cancer treatment and time of need? He worked hard all his life. Please explain this to me. Why should our State Governments be afraid of them and their complaints more than they are concerned for our familes?
I have been a nurse in the prison system for years and just can't make sense ot it. I give very good care to the inmates, but the ratio of nurses to patients in the prisons heavily outways nurse to patient ratios in the public and private hospitals. Have been a nurse in all of these locations. I am speaking through experiencs. Honest, meaningful answers please. It just isn't fair foe us hard working individuals.

Yes, that is a shame. While I won't say it's "quality" care...they at least have ACCESS to medical care, meds and so forth.
IIRC the DOJ just released a report that the prison population outlives the outside population...not sure of the numbers and if I can find the article I will post it for you.
But you can bet...it's due to their unlimited access to medical care and no "hard/physical labor" that keeps them ticking for so long.

I think both your father and prisoners should get healthcare. First off, I am very sorry about the circumstances of your father. Second of all, it is my belief that healthcare should be universal Aand that everyone, even prisoners should get it. AFter all, though they have committed a crime, they are still human beings, and therefore still deserve dignity by virtue of that. Also, I understand how you feel about your father's situation, but I am sure that you'd agree that many prisoners are fathers too, and their children don't want to see them die because the government doesn't think they are worthy of living because they made a mistake. In short, everyone should get healthcare, and it's a damn shame that our government doesn't adequately take care of its citizens.

I am sorry that your father can't get what he needs for his cancer. That sucks. Unfortunately, it's becoming more and more common. But to say that prisoners get better treatment is untrue. they don't get better treatment. Many times their medications are withheld or they don't get the proper medications that they need. Many times they don't get the treatments that they need either, and they certainly aren't living any better because they are incarcerated in either state or federal penitentiaries. If you are reading that this is happening I would seriously doubt the validity of the argument, I think it is just a ploy by the government to redirect the blame from itself to a portion of society that really can't fight back or tell the truth.
your father isn't the only one in that boat. I work in the health care field and many MANY people can't get what they need or are told which doctors to go to and which treatments they can have by the fat cat insurance & pharmaceutical companies. I myself have experienced the same problems...and I pay a good portion of my paycheck for my HMO. And I see it with medicare also, as many of their benefits are taken away as well. Don't look to blame the prisoners...they are getting nothing out of this. As always, follow the trail of money and see who is REALLY benefitting.

Because prisoners don't work, they are eligible for free healthcare. People who don't work have more rights, therefore the government treats them better.
For example, I work for the city, if my insurance won't cover for a procedure I pay out of pocket.
I don't work and I'm in prison, I need a procedure.. I contact the ACLU, they put a lawsuit on the agency that has me imprisoned, I get my medical procedure free of charge.
My kids are covered by insurance, therefore they don't need free healthcare. If they needed a procedure not paid for, they wouldn't get it.
If they weren't covered by insurance, there would be a big fund raiser and everyone from the ACLU would make sure that we could do it as long as nobody mentioned that terrible person upstairs, GOD....
See how things work, it is a great system right?

Because, unlike in other countries, they are still regarded as human beings; it is not a matter of the government being afraid. Fair or unfair, this the beauty of being an American. Why is your dad being denied treatment for a serious illness?

Are you just guessing at this or do you have any facts to support your claim? If their healthcare is so fantastic, go steal your neighbor's car. On the flip side, we could just execute anyone who commits a crime. No healthcare costs there. Possessing a humane prison system is part of the cost of having an ethical society. There's a book you should read written by a Russian author, I'll leave it at that.
I'll just go ahead and say their healthcare isn't as good as mine as presenting facts is irrelevant in this question.

First of you evil pscho lady if your dad worked hard his whole life why cant he use his hard earned money for treatment. But you are right man we should lock people up so they have no other recoasre than say to ask the people who locked them up for treatment maybe we could say that kid doing 2 yrs for stealing a car gets sick we should just let him rot and die even though his family pays just as much tax as you, but there son should suffer. is part of the prison system to let people die crule deaths or get so ill that upon release they can never become a part of society
its obvioous you take this personal and have no real knowledge of the situation. i spent 5 years in prison, where it cost me 20 dollars of my money ( i worked in prison) to see the doctor for a bad tooth, i was given benadril. Then i was charged 20 dollars to see the same doctor who gave me the same pills for an ulcer. I made less than 7 cents an hour to pay 20 dollars for less than par treatment. i feel for your dad, i would help if i could but dont make it sound like its all easy for inmates as you dont know at all what its like
It is a fact right now there are over 1 million people in prison in america. Granted those people made mistakes but they are not all monsters most are non violent, and most will be released one day soon. Released to a world that will not accept them. With no education no work history and 90% of work places saying sorry we dont hire felons america maybe in for a nightmare it didnt see comming. The economy is not easy right now and close to impossible for a FELON IF YOU DONT WANT TO DEAL WITH US SPEND 50K A YEAR TO HOUSE US

I never heard that they got the best healthcare. i think the prisons should be like they use to be, bread and water and a bathe everyother day. that will keep them from coming back. some prisoners find life better inside and not outside and that is not the message that society should be giving

oh this is an easy one....
people who are serving time are entitled to their rights....
or should i say...rehab...you know, give them a college education and computers they will come out of their cells better people...
give them cable television and all the phone time they want...
make sure they eat three meals a day....get them to the doctor when they are sick....if none of these are met....lawsuit...oh lets not forget private visits...

Haven't you heard? Taking care of those that actually work hard in this country is "communism".
