Most paints are harmful to fish. If you need to paint a room, I suggest you take the tank out of that room. Leave windows open for fresh air, I also know that room freshness sprayers can be harmful too.

Marine grade paints are the best choice. They are usualy available from boat supply shops. No doubt you can find them online as well. They come in two parts that you mix before you apply it, then it sets up over a few days. Totally fish safe and water proof.

As stated above, most other paints can leach toxins into the water and cause problems. The idea of sealing the paint with silicon is a good one if the silicone will stick to the surface well, to your paint well and provided you don't miss even a small spot. Just be sure you get aquarium sealant, not just regular silicone caulk.

Directly or indirectly? Lead based paints will leach into a tank. Acrylics will also disband in water. Oils will release a reaidue.

Did you make something for your tank and paint it? Dry bisque and painted is NOT AQUARIUM safe. Glazed only will suffice in a tank.

Ceramics will leach various toxins into your tank if not prepared properly Even after fireing. They do sell aquarium paint, however, I would not recomend it. all paints will eventually peael, ok not pool paint, but it only comes in two colors. this paint will stand up to chlorines and minerals. To get it tinted to your color....rough since the paint additives are also potential small toxic hazards. (not that bad though) N

Need more info on what it is for?

I use regular acrylic paint, then seal it (paint all over the object) with aquarium sealant. It's the stuff they use to make the aquariums hold water, so you know it's safe. It dries clear too.

I've never had a problem with it killing my fish.

    EDIT

You can get a big tube of aquarium sealant for a dollar at Walmart.
