Looking for the best working anti-spyware and anti-virus software free...?
I need some advice on the best and FREE (I can't help being cheap) anti-virus and anti-spyware online. I currently have AVG for both the anti-spyware and anti-virus and for firewall I'm using Zone Alarm. My AVG anti-spyware resident shield will expire soon so I'm in need for something that I don't have to buy after it's expired. Any advice and recommendations will be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

Keep AVG personal edition for your virus protection needs. It is a solid program backed by a large company with paying customers, and therefore an excellent choice.
As far as spyware goes, check out Lavasoft's AdAware (see link below). This is also a very solid company offering a "personal" edition free for non-commercial use while also offering more robust products for commercial clients.
I have used both of these products extensively with positive results.

Go to www.filehippo.com and download AVG Free. It's the best anti virus program I've ever used and it finds way more threats than Norton or Macafee. As for spyware protection download Spybot S&D from the same site.It does a really good job too.I've used both of these for quit some time.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Keep ZoneAlarm, it's one of the best firewall you can have. Uninstall AVG, it's an OK antivirus but there is a better one here http://www.free-av.com/ Install all of the free antispywares list below and you will be fine.

my choice would be
Active Virus Shield (ANTIVIRUS - eventhough it is from KASPERSKY model it is one of the best and FREE editions where it can be used 1 year along with hourly updates and it is compatable on almost all the windows OS)
U can also use AVAST Antivirus (free edition)
Spybot Search and Destroy (or) Adaware SE
Continue using the ZONEALRM firewall

One of the first applications built to find and remove adware and spyware, Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition's excellent reputation is well justified. The sky-blue, skinnable interface features five buttons. The first two, Status and Scan, lead to the core function of the application. These buttons initiate a scan of your files for adware components. After scanning is complete, the program presents a summary of results, followed by a list from which you select exactly which components to remove. Right-clicking an individual entry gives some information about the piece of suspected adware, though we would like more details.
Ad-Aware SE can alert you to more malignant forms of malware by separating items into critical and negligible categories. The third button, Ad-Watch, is nonfunctional in the Standard version. The fourth button, Plug-ins, shows you which Ad-Aware plug-ins are installed. The fifth leads to the help files.Ad-Aware SE does an excellent job of quickly finding and removing most adware and spyware components, although you will have to restart and rescan for a seriously infected machine. We were pleased to see an auto-update feature included with the program, keeping Ad-Aware up-to-date with the latest adware components. Ad-Aware SE should be part of your arsenal for keeping your machine free of adware and spyware components.

You know the old saying " You get what you pay for"...
There are some pretty good free solutions out there but none of them are as powerful as the top shelf programs that you have to buy. Please consider your choices carefully as you really do not want your computer infected with anything nasty.

I think with something as important as an antivirus, it's worth the investment. McAfee is like 60 a year.
