I'm 54 years old; I've been reading military and naval history since I was 7.
One of my degrees is on the WW2 Pacific campaign.
The very best single book ever written on the Pacific is "Goodbye, Darkness" by William Manchester....our sadly deceased premier historian of our time, who was college jock and frat boy in 1941 and ended up as a Sergeant Marine Raider.
It's on the reading list at Annapolis.
If you want some idea of how our parents were before the war, and how and what they saw in those ferocious, no quarter asked or given island by island fights, read Manchester's book.
It has literally awe inspiring chapters on Guadalcanal, a name that should be remembered with Valley Forge and Gettysburg

Wish I could be of help. Your father and those with him withstood tremendous odds and suffered heavy losses. I would suggest that with the photos you have, along with the personal effects, and publish them. I am sure that somewhere out there, you will find other veterans who where there as well. Do it quickly, these people are dying off at the rate of hundreds every day.
Bless you and I salute your father.
