solid lines vs shading?

hi all - wondering....I can't believe I did this but i just booked my addition to my tattoo or a 2nd tattoo...going to be my daughter's Chinese name next to her portrait (3 characters....name is her actual Chinese name, not one created by the artist) The tattoo is 3 characters but since it is completely filled in basically, is this going to cause that much more pain than the initial tattoo with shading AND solid lines? I remember that the solid lines bothered me less than the shading but just wanted to get viewpoints from other individuals with both shading and solid line experience. Any thoughts?

The lines are the worst part. The shading is more annoying. Listen to the machine, I love the way it changes sound while he's drilling away. I have always been an ambiance man.

I am still very jealous of who your FIRST tattoo artist was!

Most people generally find the outlines worse than the colouring, partly because the area often begins to feel almost numb after a while. I have found, though, that large coloured areas do make for a more uncomfortable scab during healing. Having said which, so what? It seems to me that for a tattoo you're going to wear for the rest of your life, the most important factor is getting the design the way you want it, rather than worrying about the discomfort involved - none of which is ever really all that bad. It would be a shame to compromise on your lifetime tattoo for fear of some discomfort over the short time it'll take to get it done.

Hope your tattoo turns out great!

apparently, i'm the only person who thinks the shading is worse. i mean there are multiple needles with shading. yours shouldn't be that bad at all tho... i don't expect that it will take longer than 30 mins. most people go numb within the first 10 mins or so, and stay that way for at least a couple of hours. maybe that's why i hate the shading... cuz it usually doesn't start till the numbing sensation goes away. good luck.

all my tattoos are combinations of solid, outlined and shaded. Once the outline is finished the solids or shading pain in minimal.
