Name of this hairstyle?

Those of you familiar with the Northeastern US might understand what I'm talking about. Many women, but from what I notice usually Italian-American, seem to enjoy a hairstyle that either has a ponytail pulled toward the top of the head or resembles an updo, but not really as "put together." I can't find the name of either for the life of me, and I was curious as to where the hairdo came from and why they wear their hair that way. I grew up with mostly Northern European and Native American people, and nobody I knew did that. If anyone knows what it's called, I'd be grateful.

Thanks!

Update:

Also, if the style is more for a certain hair type. That's another thing I wondered about.

I think I know what you're talking about...But it's not just with Italians. Hispanics and a lot of Caucasians do it. Actually...I would say the majority of the women and girls that do it are Hispanic or Caucasian, not Italian. Frankly I hate the hairstyle, it looks tacky...never once in my life have I worn a pony tail that high and I am Caucasian. It's usually a very tightly pulled back style as well, with or without two very small sections of hair on either side in the front framing the face and a crap load of gel. I'm not trying to be rude or anything when I say this...but it seems that it's the girls who are what people up here refer to as low-lifes, or poor or slutty that have this hairstyle. Their make-up is usually caked on, and with Caucasian girls...they either wear a thick amount of white, light green or light blue eyeshadow.

People with straight and curly hair do it. What they do it put gel or mousse in their hair, if it's curly, then put it up high and slick the front with gel so it's completely smooth, and the same with the side pieces they'll have those with gel in them too.

Ah, yes...the "Fountain" as I like to refer to it. I don't think it has a name. I'm guessing the reason for no name is because it doesn't exactly look fetching. Why do they wear their hair that way? Good question. Maybe to just get it out of their face, off their back/neck, to impress a neighbor. Who knows.

I know this didn't help, but since I'm from the Northeastern US, thought I would just chime in.
