Minimum Wage Minimum Impact?

If everybody can stop hyperventalating for just a minute...

Can anybody name me a job that is going to be impacted by the change to minumum wage? Not a generality mind you, a job.

Do you know anybody who is going to open up a pay envelope in a week and see more cash due to this law?

If not, why are we wasting time discussing it ad-nausium.

Remember: I want an exact job, not a generality for the answer.

Update:

I hadn't thought about union contracts. Good point.

Farm workers are not covered either under the old law or the new one so that is a wash.

I don't see any retailers offering only minimum wage that have any decent help, so I can't give you that one, which was my point.

Commission work is kind of tricky. If you can't earn more than your draw to start with, you are in the wrong line of work.

Thanks for the answers everybody. I have to check into that union wage issue.

There are state funded programs that subsidies and pay the salaries for people who preform tasks such as cleaning the streets in urban areas. These jobs often go to former convicts and/or those who do not have much if any education. It is designed to help rehabilitate and provide a steppingstone for people who otherwise have little means to become productive members of society. By dictating a higher federal minimum wage congress has forced cash strapped states to either increase funding or provide jobs to fewer people. I'll give you two guesses what happens.

Minimum wage should be set by the states. The US economy has vast regional differences and a federally dictated minimum wage is a highly ineffectual way to address the concerns of a tremendously diverse economic landscape. When will Liberals learn that the federal government can't fix everything?

Car salesperson starting out, the base pay is minimum wage and car sales commission is added on to that. But it is only a mater of time before the company changes the commission pay plan. I think the gap between the rich and poor is the bigger issue, it is time to turn these billionaires into millionaires and show some real trickle down.

A minimum wage hike is essentially a raise in taxes. Small businesses have to operate in a budget or they will go into debt (and no one likes going into debt). To balance out the "wage" increases, business owners may have to do a number of things. First of all, they may have to fire an employee to pay another employee's wage or they will have to raise prices, which means that the consumer (that's us) will have to pay more for products. Since, all of us aren't millionaires, we have to pay more for a product or cut back on buying something else. Of course, this leads to someone else not getting paid because our money isn't going to his business or service. This "wage" increase may of course artificially raise the price on products, which could lead to higher inflation, where you are paying more on a product against the cost of living, or a recession, because the government is taking more out of the private sector. Remember, the government creates nothing. It creates no new capital. All it does is provide services. Most of these jobs are in the fast food industry or for teenagers.

There are millions of people working in the service industry, some as a career. They are the people helping you find that perfect sweater or making sure your latte is just right. These are the people who are going to be impacted by a minimum wage increase.

I'll do my best to answer this question:

A tomato picker. A man who picks tomatoes is not required to have any experience or education, therefore it is a minimum wage job. If the minimum wage level goes up, the theory is that employers will start wanting to hire more experienced tomato pickers because it will be more profitable for them to do so, because they will probably be more productive. So what happens to the uneducated, inexperienced worker? He will be jobless. This is just one theory out of many.

See, unions negociate based on the minimum wage. Increasing the min. wage allows unions to bargin for wage increases.

From what I've seen, NO ONE will accept a job for $5.15 per hour. Most employers have been paying their lowest paid employees at least $6.00 per hour for some time.

I know people working in fast food that will be affected by this. The job? Cashier, backline cook, and runners.
