My 2 month old puppy has Kennel Cough, what can I do to make him get better?

When I brought my puppy home for the first night, he went into bad breathing spasms which the vet diagnosed as kennel cough. From personal experience, other than following the vet's advice, giving his meds regularly, making sure he's staying hydrated, here are a few tips:

- make sure he's always lying down on a clean mat vs. directly on floor

- avoid picking him up excessively or putting any pressure on chest area and neck (make sure his colloar isn't too tight)

- try to keep his area and the floor clean from dust or any other allergens such as smoke that would set him off into breathing spams.

- if breathing spasms get bad, take him out for a minute outside for some fresh oxygen.

- keep him as calm as you can.

- add puppy suppliments to his diet.

Kennel Cough In Puppies

I ve dealt with kennel cough quite a bit and these are some of the vet approved home remedies; If you can crate the pup use a baby humidifier warm mist pointed at the crate about a foot away and put a blanket over the crate to minimize drafts. Use a coat outside in the cold. You can give a weight appropriate dose of robitussin cough syrup, but has to be plain robitussin nothing else added. Use a harness until the coughing is completely gone no collars. Gently stroke the throat when the coughing spasms are bad. Get AYR saline nasal drops and use as directed for babies to help keep the nose clear, and if he/she still has a productive cough 5 days after meds are finished go back to the vet and he ll put him on another course. It takes awhile for the cough to stop so don t worry, unless the breathing becomes labored and you see mucus in the nose and eyes. Good luck hope this helps and your puppy gets better soon.

As others have said, It does sound as if your pup has kennel cough. It certainly is scary to hear your pup coughing as thou something is caught in his/her throat. Kennel cough is air born and highly contagious. Just taking your pup to the vets office can infect your pup. Even if you do not have them close to any other dogs. Dogs can also get kennel cough after receiving the vaccination. Just a humans can get a mild form of the flu after getting a flu shot. As with the flu shot the kennel cough vaccine is a live virus and there is always the chance of developing a mild form of what the vaccinations is for. The first vaccination is a nasal spray followed up a few weeks later with an injectable vaccine. The signs of kennel cough can be seen 2-14 days after the exposure. If your pup does get diagnosed by your vet as having kennel cough they will more than likely put him on an antibiotic. Kennel cough usually lasts approximately 14-21 days. Good luck with your pup and I hope all is well. Update; When you go to the vets office, let them know a head of time the symptoms that your pup is having and that you think he may have kennel cough. This way they can make arrangements to not have others dogs in the area to be infected. As for when your pup is examined by the vet...they of course will do a regular exam and then to check for the kennel cough the vet will manipulate the pups throat (externally) with his/her hand and will cause the pup to cough. From the sound of the cough they can determine if it is kennel cough. They may also do a blood test. Also a side note .... Until your puppy has had its second set of shots at 12 weeks old you should not take the pup outside of your home or property as the pup can pick up diseases from other dogs and or their droppings who have not been vaccinated. A pup just walking on another dogs fecal droppings can become seriously ill as well as in some instances (such as parasites) can pass it onto the human family members Again the best of luck to you and your pup

Puppy Cough

My 2 dogs got kennel cough years ago from the neighbor dog that went to the pound for 3 days. All you can do is follow the vets instructions.. That is all. Good luck it will get better soon!

Bordetella infection can be picked up by rabbits, guinea pigs, pigs, cats (if they are very young and housed in groups), and other dogs. My chihuahua just got over kennel cough she was on antibotics for 2 weeks and he also gave her pills to help control her cough but within like 3 days she had stopped coughing completly and hasnt coughed since.
