What is capsicum?

I've have been snooping around the Foodie questions and I keep seeing this ingredient pop up... I am American so I assume it is something used in the UK?

I live in Australia and capsicums are very common. They are red or green Peppers the size of your hand, more exotic ones are yellow and orange but they taste the same although i prefer red ones. It depends on the colour you want to have in your food.
