Where can I find a dictionary of 19th century British English?
I'm working on a novel set in London in the late 1800's. Where can I find a dictionary, a British one, not American English, that would have the terms and words from that period? I don't want a modern dictionary since some of the words from the 1800's may have dropped out of circulation. I guess I need a British dictionary that was published at least no later than the first half of the 20th century. Any ideas?
Thank you for your help.
3 AnswersHomework Help7 years agoTrying to remember the name of an old sci-fi movie?
I'm trying to recall the name of an old sci-fi movie I saw when I was a kid. The movie was probably from the 1950's. It was in black and white. It was about a crew on a spaceship with this humanoid monster trapped in the bottom, or the cargo hold of the ship. Every time they'd open the hatch to try and kill it in some way, (such as throwing acid on it), it was impervious to their attacks and endeavored to climb the stairs to get to them. They then close the hatch again, keeping it trapped as they think of some new way to kill it. Finally, they decide to let all the air of the ship and the monster perishes. Does anyone remember this movie?

1 AnswerMovies7 years agoHow do I resize my photos?
OK, I know practically nothing about computers so bare with me. I have a Dell PC with Windows 8. I have photos that I've uploaded from my Cannon digital camera. The photos are like 3-4 megabytes each. If I want to e-mail a bunch of them the size overloads the attachment capacity. Is there a way to make the photos smaller, (which I assume will reduce their megabytes)?
There's an option of opening up a photo with some program called "Photo Gallery." It has all sorts of editing options but I'll be damned if I can find one to make the photo smaller. Is this the right software? Is there some other software that came with the computer that does this? I have a bunch of Microsoft applications that came with the computer.
Thank you everyone, from the guy who was brought up on dial phones and TV's with antennas.

1 AnswerSoftware7 years agoAdjusting Photos for Desktop Background?
I have a Dell PC with Windows 7. I have photos stored on the hard drive that were taken with my digital camera. When I select a photo to be the desktop background, the photo is too big for the screen. Only the center of the photo is displayed. How can I adjust the photo, the computer, whatever, so that the entire photo fits on the desktop proportionately?

2 AnswersSoftware8 years agoProblem with playing my Ipod through my stereo?
I have a Yamaha receiver R-S700 and a Yamaha dock YDS-12, both purchased in 2010. I had an Ipod nano from 2007 that fit into the dock and played through my stereo. Then the Ipod died. I had another nano from 2012 which also fit directly into the dock but would not play through the stereo. It plays in my car via the usb port and plays with an earpiece. So I bought a brand new Ipod nano, which has a "lightening" connection. Apple gave me an adapter so it would fit into my dock which it did. However, same problem as the 2012 nano, it would not play through the stereo but again plays in my car and with the ear piece.
I called Apple who had nothing to offer but the usual "it should work." I called Yamaha who said the same thing but finally offered that it must be the dock that went bad. (But if the dock went bad, why was it able to play my 2007 nano?) So I'm buying a new dock and will see what happems. In the interim, does anybody have any ideas?
Thank you for your help with this very frustrating problem.
2 AnswersMusic & Music Players8 years agoHow to search for a specific word in your files in Windows 8?
In Windows XP there was a search option whereby you could search all your word files for a specific word. So for example, if you had a folder called "science" with 100 Microsoft Word articles in it, and you were looking for the one that mentioned Isaac Newton, there was an option to search for a word in that folder. You would put "Newton" in the search box and it would pull up all the articles from that folder containing the word Newton. I can't find this option in Windows 8. Did they remove it?

I would like to change the default sound my computer makes when I receive a new e-mail. I wish to replace it with a wav file I have stored on my hard drive. I went to control panel and then sounds. I chose new e-mail notification and selected the sound I wanted and applied it. Nevertheless, I still get the default sound. This used to work on my old computer.

5 AnswersReality Television9 years agoBuy a new computer or "clean" the one I have?
I have an 8 year old Dell computer. I don't do anything more sophisticated than surfing the net, e-mail, and writing documents in Microsoft word. The computer has become progressively slower. I have anti-virus and anti-spyware software and defrag every so often. My friend installed additional RAM to no avail. Still slow. I was told that I should buy one of those aerosol cans, open it up, spray the dust off it, and try that. Is that worth the effort, or given the computer's age, is it time for me to just simply buy a new computer? Thank you for your feedback.
11 AnswersDesktops9 years agoDoes anyone remember this movie?
I'm trying to recall a horror movie I saw in the 1980's. Can't remember the name. It was about this group of people, I think stranded on an Island with a crazed killer. The killer, years before, had been stranded at sea with his wife and son and went mad. He ended up killing and eating his wife and son. Now he is preying upon this unsuspecting group. One girl in the group reads tarot cards and tells people futures. Another in the group is a doctor who ends up being the hero by killing the killer by striking him with an axe in the end. Does anyone remember the name of this movie?

I'm a chef and like to grow my own herbs. While I know about cooking with them, I don't know much about growing them. My question is about basil. Someone told me to pinch off the flowers of the basil plant as this will enable greater leaf growth. Is this true???

5 AnswersGarden & Landscape10 years agoProblem with chandelier on dimmer switch?
We have a chandelier in our living room on a dimmer switch installed by a handyman, i.e., not a licensed electrician. When the switch is on very low the light goes out after a few minutes. If I turn the intensity up to medium or better, then it stays on. Is this normal or do I have a potential electrical problem? It wasn't always this way. It just started happening recently. Than you in advance for any help you can offer.
7 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoQuestion about oil heat?
We have oil heat which powers a boiler generating steam. There are radiators in every room of the house. My question is, does shutting off the valve of a radiator in a room we're not using save oil and hence money? Will shutting off valves actually decrease the amount of steam produced which in turn means less oil burned? Or is the same amount of steam still being produced but just re-routed? Thank you everyone for your input.
3 AnswersOther - Home & Garden1 decade agoAM Loop Antenna Problems?
I installed an AM loop antenna on my receiver. There are two radio stations, of similar strength, that I get equally well in my car. However, I am only able to receive the one on my home receiver. Does anyone have any suggestions for increasing the strength of the antenna, or maybe I need a different antenna? Perhaps the location of my house and/or stereo has something to do with it regardless of the antenna? Thank you for your help.
