Question about growing basil?
I'm a chef and like to grow my own herbs. While I know about cooking with them, I don't know much about growing them. My question is about basil. Someone told me to pinch off the flowers of the basil plant as this will enable greater leaf growth. Is this true???
Thank you for your help.

Yes, that is true, it promotes branching too. Funny thing about basil is there are quite a few different kinds but the common or larger leafed Italian basil are the quickest growing, I find, and easy. Sprinkle four or five seeds in a four inch pot and cover lightly with soil, wet and keep moist but don't let it sit in water and put it in a sunny spot. A few weeks later do it again because as plants get old and you use them they tend to get woody and slow growing.
I grow thousands of pots like these and they sell for four dollars each but you can do it for pennies.

Yes, and it's also true to pinch off the center stem to promote the plant to bush outward.
Do not, for bst flavor, use a non soil growing medium, as the basil will no doubt be on the bland side, and be sure to use the right type, as they are not all the same.
We grow our basil outdoors, and like it much better than that which is grown indoors under artificial light.

Basil is an handy herb to develop. You can begin it from seed lovely readily, however it is larger to try this previous within the season if you are going to do it external. Inside there are quite no obstacles. You can maintain it going yr circular even concept it is an annual (lasts one yr). A well factor to do is pinch it again earlier than it vegetation. If you notice a flower, take it off. Whenever there are stems with four leaves tight in combination pinch them off. If you maintain this up you'll be able to create a plant that's very furry and produces many leaves. As with so much herbs, if it is going to flower the herbs' taste will lose depth, so ensure to maintain the vegetation off. Water and maintain it in a sunny location and your plant will have to do good. You too can develop Basil within the lawn. It grows terrifically with Tomatoes. You can use the leaves contemporary, or dry them in a paper bag or simply dangle them in a place out of the solar... You can purchase crops from many lawn facilities too, that's an handy and rapid strategy to get began.

When Basil flowers the plant loses flavor, when the flowers are pollinated and allowed to go to seed the plant dies. Cuttings root in water.

keep flowers pinched out, not only to encourage bushy growth; but to keep basil from getting bitter.
