Should I periodically replace my external hard drive?
I have an external hard drive to back up my data. A friend of mine said that they can become corrupt and I should periodically buy a new one and transfer my data to it. Would you guys recommend this? If so, how often would you buy a new one? Thank you for your input.

If you are backing up your data that means that you have 2 copies, 1 on your PC and 1 on the external. The chance of both dying simultaneously is pretty slim. If you are just keeping files on it that aren't redundant then I would suggest getting a second drive in case the one quits working. I've seen many drives tank without much warning.

It's true, all hard drives eventually get corrupted and die (this holds true for both internal and external drives). If your data is still on a drive when it gets corrupted it's usually lost.
However, there are usually plenty of warning signs to tell you before your drive starts to go. If you start getting error messages when you try to access the drive, for instance, that's the time to start considering a replacement.
