Buy a new computer or "clean" the one I have?

I have an 8 year old Dell computer. I don't do anything more sophisticated than surfing the net, e-mail, and writing documents in Microsoft word. The computer has become progressively slower. I have anti-virus and anti-spyware software and defrag every so often. My friend installed additional RAM to no avail. Still slow. I was told that I should buy one of those aerosol cans, open it up, spray the dust off it, and try that. Is that worth the effort, or given the computer's age, is it time for me to just simply buy a new computer? Thank you for your feedback.

you don't need anything special to surf the net although you computer is old it may just do what you want as it's becoming slower it's not the computer itself if you've never had windows reinstalled then after eight years it's probably time to do so,

as windows ages and is used a lot it does get slower so slowly you very often don't notice until one day when you get frustrated waiting for it to responed.

reinstalling windows will bring the computer back up to the speed it was when it was new but if the hard drive is the original one you may want to consider changing that as well hard drivers aren't expensive the reason behind changing it is it's old and probably on it's last legs and probably one of the reasons why you computer is slow

still blast the dust away with an aerosol it keeps them running quieter and stops overheating

  • Your old computer needs the following things done-

    1. A thorough clean up of dust that has accumulated over 8 years.

    2. A full format of the hard disk.(This will remove all the fragmentation and all that, but backup first.)

    3. A fresh install of whichever operating system you prefer.(I am assuming it is Windows).

Since the computer is 8 years old, I'm assuming that it either has a Pentium 4 or at most, a Dual-Core. The latter would be better but P4 isn't bad either, considering your usage.

You may need to add more RAM. If you are gonna install Windows 7, I'd recommend at least 2 GB.

    That's all.

P.S.-In case you go for a new computer, please consider a laptop (the new "ultrabooks" would be well suited to your needs.)

whatever you end up doing try this

check out an app called F.lux

it makes your screen redder at night to help you sleep better and it's just a great program

like have you seen people texting at night seriously i'm not trying to quote the website it's just an amazing example to help you understand --- you see that blue reflection on people's face and shirt - well it SHOULD NOT BE BLUE --- it should switch to a more red color like look at a peice of paper outside at night and look at your phone -- see the difference?

ok here's the link http://stereopsis.com/flux/ also notice how the made the website more red instead of white so since you don't have it installed yet it won't hurt your eyes on that site

btw really make sure you give it the right location so you get the right setting

but if you think it's too red you can change it

Buy a new computer! Even if you clean your old computer it will never come close to being as fast as you want it to be. I suggest going out this "Black" Friday after Thanksgiving, and getting a new Dell. Any other computer (including Dell) have much better processors, and keep out more viruses. You will get more RAM with a new computer, and you can re-use the new RAM that you used on the old one.

Format the PC and install only the required softwares. Try to avoid heavy softwares like Firefox.

buying a computer will cost at least 30000 rs but cleaning a computer like if you put a new motherboard ,an i5 processor ,1 tb hdd, 4gb ram , 1gb graphic card it will cost you less than 25ooo and i bet it will be way good than buying a new one .the one i suggested will be faster than enough i bet

Get a new one. The computer is 8 years old, with new technology and faster processors coming around every 6 months, you should really purchase a new computer.

if that is all you do on the pc you shouyld just format the hard drive and reinstall windows (i assume its xp at that age) you do the formatting from the xp disc before reinstalling, it is very straight forward and will leave the pc like it was when new

you Pc will be having lot of junk files... Try to remove it .. using Revo uninstaller , ccleaner and disk clean up and register clean up and you can make it fast.. And it should be more than enough for just internet surfing and MS office

or install the OS again and your PC will be fresh and fast
