Adjusting Photos for Desktop Background?

I have a Dell PC with Windows 7. I have photos stored on the hard drive that were taken with my digital camera. When I select a photo to be the desktop background, the photo is too big for the screen. Only the center of the photo is displayed. How can I adjust the photo, the computer, whatever, so that the entire photo fits on the desktop proportionately?

Thank you for your help.

or you can just right click your desktop

    select personalise

    select Desktop Background

at the bottom left you have options to change how the picture is displayed.

try fit or stretch (may distort image)

if this dosnt satisfy then do as Alejandro said and change the pixel size of your image to the size of your desktop using image software.

You can use an image editor such as Gimp to scale or crop the photo so it fits.
