Mcafee or Norton Anti-Virus?
I'm getting a new Dell desktop with Windows 8. It comes with Mcafee anti-virus but I've always used Norton. Is there any significant difference between the two? What would you guys recommend? Thank you for your help.
Good Lord! Now I'm totally confused. Ya know. I did a search on the internet and the results were as divergent as the answers here. I also asked a few tech-savvy friends and a computer tech I know, and still.................everyone tells me something different. Pro-Norton. Anti-Norton. Pro-Mcafee. Anti-Mcafee. Anti-Norton and Mcafee. Avast, Kaspersky, Microsoft Essentials, Immunet, and others.
I want to thank all of you for input. In actuality, all of you helped me. Because when there is such a breadth of opinion, that means that there is no clear or specific answer. It tells me that I should just get some kind of anti-virus program, (better some kind than nothing), and just hope for the best.

If those two are the choices, then use norton, they both suck, but norton sucks much less.
Before you get all...whatever!...about me calling norton a program that sucks, you should know that most AV products can protect a computer from malware with a user that has good internet habits, and if norton has kept you malware free for the time you have used it, then it's a good AV for you, so keep it, if you like, and trust it.
Stay away from crapafee. When you get your laptop, use the crapafee removal tool to uninstall it.

Both of those companies make anti-virus software that is horribly resource constraining. These days, you're better off just getting Microsoft's Security Essentials. It's the same product as their corporate Endpoint anti-virus, and you don't have to screw around with purchasing or licensing. I haven't seen it bog down a computer yet.

Hi,
Its better to refer AV-Test.org to compare these products, they have more than 25 years of experience in Security product testing and they periodically updates their test reports according to the new product versions released.
They Just started to test in Windows8 platform, hopefully reports will get soon.
Also reffer www.av-comparatives.org/ they too are good at it.
My personal recommendation is "BitDefender"
And if you look for maximum security, then it's better change the Product that you are using Periodically.
Because no Security product can identify all the threats that are present today...

I would recommend you to either use Immunet or Kaspersky antivirus software. As per my experience, these are the best then Norton antivirus.

I use Avast!. It's free and works perfectly. Updates are regular and also free.
