Why do drivers use fog lights?

Actually, I wonder why auto makers have them configured for use when any other headlight is being used. I have *NEVER* seen one that makes significant difference in night driving vision to offset the blinding effect it has to on coming traffic, especially older drivers and people who where distance glasses. I believe if they new just how difficult they make avoiding them while blinding the on-coming drivers, they would never use them.

Can someone help me out here!?

I get your point I think . All these idiots who have there fog lights on all the time. Well it's obvious they have no idea what there real purpose is. It's just another sign how rude people are getting. They don't care that there blinding other drivers. They think it makes them look cool. I know because I asked some of these idiots why they do it. There pretty much up there with the same a holes who do not know where the high beam dimmer switch.

I'm not sure where you live but I live in Alabama and fog is VERY common here! It's important for me to have fog and/or driving lights (you sure you aren't getting the two confused???) on a vehicle as some of the area that drive in is rather rural and deer are common. It's important that I can see in front of the vehicle as well as having some side vision. Fog and driving lights are very common practice here and most ppl will cut them off if you flash your high beams at them. I know how annoying it is to be in front of a vehicle that has 'spotlights' on it but you just have to make it a point to adjust your rear-view and not look at the lights.

fog lights(your original topic) are amber colored lights used in conjunction with low beams to see better in the fog(not the lights that blind you, which are driving lights) a great tip a friend shared with me and i have tried and proven, is , if you are in a real heavy fog and your own lights are reflecting back in your eyes , get some mud from a ditch and smear it on your headlights to dim them somewhat. this makes them a crude form of fog lights and it really works!( obviously i live in the country)

other than the obvious fact that they are pretty dang bright, they do help you see a little more off to each side of you when they are on or if you are driving in foggy conditions they will light up the road a lot better than your normal headlights. hope this helps.
