Is there a reason why my federal wages (box 1) and my state wages (box 16) may not agree on my W2?

There may be things that are tax exempt from one but not the other.
Some states exempt SS and Medicare taxes from state tax. Or you may have Federal pre-tax items that are not given the same tax break at the state level.

If the W-2 was provided by your employer, you should trust whatever figures they put on the W-2 for you. If you have your taxes prepared at H&R block (or another provider) they should be able to inform you of what is going on.

It is possible that your State doesn't have an income tax? Check with your employer - human resources.
If you live in Texarkanna, that can be the reason.

There may be a maximum taxable income for your state.
It mostly depends on what state you are in.
